I am one of those people who are either freakishly calm, or overwhelmed. There really isn’t an in between unfortunately, but I am working on it!
No matter the situation, people around me will often comment on how calm and chilled out I am. This is amazing because it means that they can’t see the overwhelmed person that I secretly am. Those who do get to see me being overwhelmed either caught me on a stressful day, I am allowing them to see me overwhelmed because I realize that I need help, or are one of my family members or bosses at work.
When I am overwhelmed it can be hard to calm myself down again.
I am working on keeping myself calm more often and I figured that other people can benefit from what I’ve been trying to do as well.
So here are my tips for when you’re overwhelmed!
- Take breaks. Most people, especially me, keep pushing though and working on whatever it is that needs working on whilst feeling overwhelmed. THIS IS NOT HELPFUL. At least not for me because then I’m not allowing my mind and body to calm down. I’m trying my best to take small breaks when I am overwhelmed.
- Use these breaks to actually do something. Stretch, take a walk, have a tea, read a chapter of a book, make it fun! Tea for me is incredibly calming, so if I’m at home that is my go to break. I make a tea and sip it slowly, inhaling the delicious scent that helps me keep calm. I have also been trying to stretch more often as when I’m overwhelmed I find my muscles can be quite jittery. What I’ve been doing is some yoga moves that I’ve learned at my yoga classes, and just try to breathe and stretch it out.
- Shut it down. Your brain I mean. I am guilty of having a brain that won’t quit, and I can keep myself stressed out and overwhelmed for hours because I keep my brain focused on whatever is overwhelming me. I have been trying to shut down my brain and just relax. I’m not the best at it to be honest, but I’m sure I’ll get there one day.
- Read a book. I mentioned this above under the breaks tip, but I wanted to come back to it once more and just reiterate this point. Reading is such an amazing way to take your mind away from whatever it is that’s overwhelming you and just escape into the story. I can spend days in a book, living the lives of the characters and it is SO helpful when I’m overwhelmed.
So yeah, these are just tips for when you’re overwhelmed that works for me. Something else may work for you. It is definitely worth trying out whatever tips you can get your hands on I find.
I hope these can help you out when you are feeling overwhelmed.
