I know. I KNOW! How I Met Your Mother ended a couple of years ago. So why am I bringing it up now?
I began watching the show when it first came out and I loved it. My room mates and I would all gather and watch it together. It was a great way that we all spent time together.
But then university got in the way what with homework and parties and jobs, so we all kind of stopped watching the show together. I would occasionally watch an episode or two, but never really kept up with it.
I remember when it ended, seeing all of the Facebook statuses of people enraged by the finale, but I never checked for spoilers because I knew that one day I would finally watch it myself.
Fast forward to this year.
My boyfriend and I always choose a show to watch while we eat dinner. After our dinner is over then we’ll put on a different show or movie. We just have the dinner show buffer as a “think about nothing and just watch” kind of show.
At one point it was The Office (which we may have just re-started, YES!), another time it was That 70’s Show, and recently it was HIMYM.
I really loved the show. It was perfect to just throw on and not become too addicted (until the final two seasons). It was chill.
Then in the final two seasons, which were crazy sad and moody, we didn’t want to keep ending the episodes on a sad note so we ended up binge watching, since all episodes ended a bit sad.
I loved how the last season mostly took place surrounding Robin & Barney’s wedding. I loved them together and was like “damn, it’s about time!”
I loved finally getting to see the mother in the show (fun fact, when I was in NYC a few years ago I saw her perform in the Broadway musical Once!) and seeing her and Ted’s relationship.
I couldn’t understand why everyone hated the ending so much.
Then came the finale.
I loved how they brought back so many characters from previous seasons, but that’s about all.
When we find out that Robin & Barney divorced I was more sad than I should have been.
When Robin skips out on so many years of the friendship, I was disappointed.
When Barney goes back to his ways I was like, well figures, but still a bit disappointed.
It felt like the whole show had been for nothing.
Then when we find out that the mother has been dead the whole time, all I could think of was the Grease theory of Sandy being dead the whole time and it really disturbed me for some reason.
Like, I watch this comedic show over a span of 8 years only to find out the character that the whole show is about has been dead the whole time?!?!
And the kids are just like “Go date Robin!”
So off goes Ted to get the blue horn and it’s a throw back to season 1, and really the show has been all about him being in love with Robin.
Scott and I talked about it, neither of us liked how it ended. He thinks it should have ended with all of the kids of of the crew going into the bar, seeing the booth, and going to sit there to form their own kind of crew, talking about how that booth is where it all began.
I would have much preferred that ending.
So this has been a rant and a half on a show that ended a few years ago.
I guess all I want to say is I loved the show, but I am just so disappointed (like most others) with how it ended and now when I think of the show I’m just a bit annoyed. I can never look at it the same way again, because I know it really has nothing to do with meeting the kids mother. It is just all about his love for Robin.
Did you watch the show?
How did you like the ending?
Have you re-watched it at all?
