My first night in Sydney I was supposed to go meet some friends from university who lived in Manley. They ended up falling asleep before I arrived, but my journey to Manley that night was a gorgeous one that needs to be shared with everyone.
The ferry from Circular Quay to Manley beach is about 20 minutes or so and offers brilliant views of the Sydney Opera House and the Harbor Bridge. Speaking of the Harbor Bridge, I climbed it the next night!
On this particular boat ride I found a seat at the back so I could stare at the gorgeous lit up view of the landmarks as the boat sailed towards Manley beach. I sat next to an older woman who was visiting Sydney with her family and they were so excited to have that trip together. I think they were feeling sad for me since I was travelling alone so that’s why they kept chatting me up.
That’s actually one of the things I love most about solo travel, all of the people you possibly wouldn’t meet otherwise. When people see a solo traveler they seem to be much more likely to strike up a conversation than they would to a group.
Once I got to Manley beach I tried to get a hold of my friends again, but now they weren’t answering. *(they were asleep, insert irritated face here)* So I wandered around a bit, but as it was pitch black and a few guys were staring me down I decided to grab some chocolate gelato, and wait for the next ferry back.
Which wasn’t for another hour, since it was so late. *(insert another irritated face here)*
On the way back to Circular Quay I made sure to sit at the front this time so I could once again admire the spectacular view that is Sydney at night.
Tip When traveling along at night, make sure people know where you are and where you are going at all times. I felt completely safe, but really, who knows.
The next day I took another ferry to Taronga zoo, and made sure to also sit at the back to check out the views. This time though it was pouring out, so the views weren’t quite as spectacular.
I cannot wait to head back to Sydney one day to actually check out Manley during the day, but I wouldn’t go back in time and change what happened. I will never forget this view.
Where is your favorite place that you’ve been at night?
