I love cooking. I think we all know this, but I just thought I would reiterate. Working shift work full time does kind of get in the way of my cooking though, because every shift is different and my schedule is all over the place, often times leaving me feeling a tad exhausted. As a new vegetarian, I really want to take the time to try out some meat replacement items that I can throw in my big pots of chili or spaghetti sauces, or for filling tacos.
I’ve always loved avocado toast, hence the feature image, but I have never tried out meat replacements before.
Not going to lie, I was a bit terrified.
Not because I thought anything was going to taste bad, but because I am so used to the taste and texture of meat. I am really big on textures. I hate mushrooms, not because of the taste (do they even have a taste??) but the texture freaks me out. I feel like when they are raw I feel like I am chewing on an ear, but when they are cooked I feel like I am chewing on a slug.
So of course I have been worried about my issues with texture. Who knew how meat replacements would feel?!
Let me fill you in on how everything has been going!
These veggie bacon strips were the first meat replacement product that I tried.
So how did they go?
They went okay. I burned them a bit because I felt like I’m used to crispy bacon. These do not need as much cooking time as real bacon, just so you all know!
Other than being burnt, they tasted pretty good.
I’ll have to try making them again, and cooking them right next time.
These veggie pepperoni’s are so good!
I’m pretty sure they’re basically the same as the bacon strips, but having it on a pizza with cheese and red peppers they tasted delicious!
I may have already bought some more for snacks…. This meat replacement is an A ++
I have yet to try this out, even though it was the first product I purchased.
I have it sitting in my freezer, waiting for a stir fry.
I’m a bit scared to try this out, as the pieces look large and I always loved chicken. Once again, it’s a texture thing.
I remember as a kid my step aunt’s boyfriend putting a cold, nasty piece of tofurky in my mouth and my spitting it out. It had an awful texture.
This was years ago though, and when I use this product it will be cooked in a stir fry.
Chances are I will end up loving it, so I just need to suck it up and try it out!
I love love love this!
I’ve used it in spaghetti sauces (which is what I’m doing for dinner tonight, yum!) and it tastes way better than any meat ever did.
Even if I still ate meat, I think I would use this product instead of meat anyways, I liked it that much.
It has a great texture and taste, so I can’t see me ever switching this out for meat again.
The same product as above except this one is for tacos or burritos.
I have not yet tries this because I haven’t thought to make tacos, but seeing as they are one of my favourites, I will definitely be using this sometime soon!
I hope I love it as much as the spaghetti product.
Would any of you be willing to try these products, or have you?
