Just what do we think we are doing?
I just spent the last two days being paid by work to go to a pesticide training course.
Here in British Columbia, to sell pesticides stores must have someone scheduled, called a pesticide dispenser. This dispenser’s job is to make sure to talk to every customer who is purchasing a pesticide to make sure that they have read the label, that they are over 16, to find out what pests they are spraying, and to make sure they know the dangers and how to dispose of the product.
I’ve known about this since starting at my store a year ago, and I never thought much of it, other than how annoying it can be/awkward it can be to have a customer yelling at you at the cash while waiting for a pesticide dispenser to come over to discuss the product with the customer.
I never actually took the time to learn anything myself about pesticides and their uses.
Now that I am working in the seasonal department at work, I figured I wanted to be pesticide trained so that way I knew more about the products that customers ask me about.
And honestly, now I’m scared.
Pesticides are SO awful!
I’ve always been concerned with the poisons that we sell, or the sticky traps that people choose to let rodents get stuck to, and die a slow painful death, but I have never thought about what it is doing to our environment.
I really should have though.
I never realised how dangerous these products can be.
These products that I see parents letting their children play with in the cart while walking around the store.
These products that people spray the fruits and vegetables that they will soon be eating.
These products that pets can have access to because people choose not to use a bait station.
The amount of deaths that have been caused, both pests, animals and human, by these products, and people choose to give attitude to the people who are trying to explain the dangers.
It’s honestly sickening.
I understand that you don’t want rats in your house, but instead of using a rat poison that your child or animal can get into, eat, than hemorrhage (literally bleed from every opening, including hair follicles) use a friggen trap! I’ve never liked poison because then the rodent still has enough time to choose to go hide in the walls, then die and stink up the apartment. I’ve never realised how bad they are for pets and humans too.
Even though it makes perfect sense.
People use Round-Up, and I see them buying multiple bottles. This stuff is awful! Yes it will kill your weeds, but it will also kill any other living thing in the area that you sprayed. When I have recommended to people to use a mask, they just laugh and don’t listen.
Glyphosate (Round-up) is scientifically proven to cause cancer, sterility, thyroid problems…I can keep going.
AND WE SPRAY THIS EVERYWHERE!
If some idiot decides to spray when it is windy, the pesticide will be moved all around the neighborhood. Your neighbors don’t know that they need a respiratory mask.
Now you just possibly screwed up their lives, and neither of you know it yet.
A lot of elderly people have laughed and said they’ve been using it for years, and they are unable to breathe and are leaning on a shelf because they can’t stand up right. And that they will die soon, so who cares?
Um, your grandchildren?
What naturally should take 10-12 days to kill the weeds, they can now do in 8 hours. Oh, and is also rain proof.
Inhaling these products can kill you.
Many landscaper’s are now developing symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, a disease that has been generally thought to be genetic. Now landscapers are more frequently being put on the suicide watch list, not because they are suicidal, but because they have such bad shakes they cannot hold a fork or knife for fear of slitting their own throat’s while trying to eat.
Also, dust masks DO NOTHING. You need a respiratory mask, or you may as well have fun choking on your vomit.
Sorry for the bluntness, but after learning so much the past two days, and finding myself tearing up too many times hearing stories of how parents accidentally killed their children because they did not listen to the dispensers or follow the instructions on the labels, everyone needs to hear this.
Mother Nature knew what she was doing and then us humans went and screwed it all up.
You want to know why weeds come out? It’s to say that your soil levels are unbalanced.
And people just buy a pesticide and spray their gardens, contaminating the vegetables they are going to eat, and keeping the soil sick because they aren’t listening to the message Mother Nature was sending.
Soil used to just be soil. Now it is rare to find pure soil, because the only pure soil left in the world is in South America.
We need to fertilize the soil we have here because now nothing can grow without help. Nitrogen fertilizer is what we are using.
The statistics of how we keep having to add more nitrogen every year is insane, especially compared to how little there was naturally until we started messing with it.
Ever heard of Agent Orange? You probably have. Want to know a fun fact? This is in Killex, but is disguised under the name 2.4.D…
Changing the name of dangerous, shit products do not change the fact that they are deadly.
Another fun fact? Pesticide laws in Canada have not changed in 62 years.
And there are 62 super weeds in Canada that no product can kill.
That one new super weed every year because of the pesticides that we are using.
It has been such an interesting two days learning so much that I never would have known had I not gone to this class. But at the same time, it was a really sad two days. It was sad seeing what we have done to the world, and how ignorant people can be to the dangers that they are carelessly putting out in the world.
I know this post has been the most random post I have ever done, and probably will ever do, but I want to share with everyone how important education yourselves is, and the dangers of using these products if you don’t fully understand what you are using.
